The need to establish and maintain strong relationships between the Queensland Police Service and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at the local level is a high priority under the community policing philosophy instituted in 1990.
Abstract
The service has established a network of cross-cultural liaison officers in each region. They work with community organizations and individuals to identify and address policing problems and facilitate communication between police and the communities. Also, Police/Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committees are being formed throughout the state. These committees assist in increasing community involvement in policing issues, improving police understanding of the needs of ethnic communities and individuals, increasing the number of ethnic police officers, and facilitating appropriate police response to the needs of ethnic people. Other efforts undertaken to improve police/Aboriginal relations include police training in the cultural backgrounds of the ethnic groups they serve and regional initiatives designed to improve community involvement in local policing. 2 references
