This solicitation for a research and development project in the area of youth firearms use and violence is the result of an interagency agreement involving the National Institute of Justice, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Abstract
The solicitation recognizes the importance of understanding and preventing violent crime and its public health consequences. The public health approach to violence emphasizes prevention through identifying individual and situational risk and protective factors and experimentation with intervention strategies based on these factors. The solicitation also acknowledges that deaths among young people involving firearms have significantly increased, especially in urban areas, and recommends a problem-solving approach to violence prevention. The goal of the planned project is to demonstrate the utility of working partnerships among juvenile justice, law enforcement, criminal justice, and public health agencies. Information on elements to be included in project proposals is included, as well as application procedures and forms. 7 references
