One course objective is to familiarize students with attributes of African-American gangs, Hispanic gangs, Asian gangs, skinhead gangs, and prison gangs. For each of these types of gangs, the material addresses gang history, organization and structure, gang warfare, drug activities, gang nicknames, gang hand signs, graffiti, identification of gang members, and suggested police strategy for countering each type of gang. Following descriptions of the various types of gangs, the manual lists criteria for determining a gang profile. These criteria are to be used in completing a street gang information card for each juvenile arrested. Another section of the manual briefly describes West Covina (California) police officer shooting confrontations with gang members for 1989 and 1990. Another course objective is to demonstrate how to apply the gang-awareness knowledge to enhance officers' safety techniques. Having completed this course, participants will be prepared to instruct other officers in gang awareness.
