The summary of program activities focuses on demand- reduction education programs in which police officers participate and the use of multijurisdictional task forces for programs that integrate Federal, State, and local drug law enforcement agencies and prosecutors. Other program activities targeted domestic sources of controlled and illegal substances, improved the operational effectiveness of drug law enforcement and court procedures in drug cases, provided drug treatment programs, and strengthened urban enforcement and prosecution efforts that target street drug sales. The report also summarizes the activities conducted during the year under any discretionary grants received by the State. A report on the evaluation of the short-term effects of D.A.R.E. in the Saline County schools indicates that although D.A.R.E. graduates rated the knowledge learned in the program as either helpful or very helpful, it did not reduce their use of cigarettes, alcohol, and other drugs compared to non-D.A.R.E. graduates. This report also explains how the Federal funds provided were coordinated with State agencies that received Federal funds for drug abuse education, prevention, treatment, and other relevant activities.
