This report presents narrative information and tabular data on inmate admissions and releases in New York State from January 1 through December 31, 1993.
Abstract
Data address the size of the inmate population at the end of December 1993 compared to December 1992 and the number of various types of admissions (commitments, parole violators, conditional release violators, and other admissions) for calendar years 1992 and 1993. The inmate population rose by 2,833 inmates (a 4.6-percent increase) from December 1992 to December 1993. Total admissions for calendar year 1993 were 35,830 (3,600 higher than recorded for 1992). Data on releases show the numbers for each type of release (parole, conditional release, maximum expiration, and "other"). There were 32,997 inmates released from Department of Corrections facilities during calendar year 1993, a 16.4-percent increase compared to 1992. Paroles accounted for 22,447 of the 1993 releases, compared to 20,302 for 1992, up 10.6 percent. Conditional releases at 3,402 were slightly below the 3,505 reported in 1992. Releases at expiration of sentence rose by 355. Other releases increased from 3,839 to 6,097, reflecting an increase in absconders from temporary release. The 12-month average showed releases increased in all categories but conditional releases. 5 tables and 2 figures
