The questionnaire mailed to the administrators of all 56 of Maryland's prisons and detention centers received a 100 percent response. Results revealed that almost all the facilities provide drug testing, while 79 percent of detention centers and 46 percent of prisons test for alcohol use. Testing for HIV/AIDS is available at 96 percent of prisons and 66 percent of detention centers. Eight-six percent of the detention centers and 58 percent of the State prisons provide drug education. Detoxification services are available at 55 percent of the detention centers and only 8 percent of the State prisons. Eighty-three percent of the detention centers and 65 percent of the prisons offer 12- step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Sixty-two percent of the detention centers and 19 percent of the prisons offer group counseling. Two State prisons (8 percent) and 9 detention centers (31 percent) offer intensive drug treatment. Twenty-eight percent of the detention centers offer part-time treatment. Fourteen percent of the detention centers provide Antabuse, and 7 percent provide methadone maintenance.
