This compendium addresses the role of the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute (FCJEI) in preparing current and future criminal justice executives for leadership, conducting research to improve executive leadership, and disseminating research articles and other publications to Florida's criminal justice executives.
Abstract
Established in 1990, the FCJEI is administrated under the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Its educational offerings are designed to help the criminal justice community respond to both current and future challenges. The FCJEI has developed a Senior Leadership Program (SLP) that includes participant orientation and class sessions. Final study papers of charter SLP class members are included in the compendium. The papers consider the changing role of probation and parole, computerized law enforcement tracking, pre-employment psychological screening of police dispatchers, law enforcement accreditation, and unified police service in Florida. The papers also address law enforcement professional standards, drug law enforcement, police brutality, community-oriented policing in the university environment, alternatives to incarceration, managing use of force investigations, the impact of ethics on law enforcement by the year 2000, organizing for decisionmaking, police management, values- based performance appraisal and evaluation, and literacy standards for entry-level criminal justice practitioners.
