The New York State Department of Corrections established the Comprehensive Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Program (CASAT) to provide a continuum of treatment services to male and female inmates.
Abstract
The first phase involves participation in an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Correctional Treatment Center (ASACTC). Each of the ASACTC annexes is a medium-security facility that operates as a therapeutic community. Treatment includes drug education, counseling programs, and the development of skills and coping mechanisms to assist recovery. In the Community Reintegration phase, the participant moves to a work-release facility or to an appropriate placement in the community. In the third phase, Aftercare, offenders are released from prison and placed in transitional housing, where they continue in a structured treatment program while becoming reintegrated to the responsibilities of employment and community living. This phase, which lasts during the first year of probation supervision, focuses on relapse prevention. 3 appendixes
