The program's mission is to reduce the criminality of drug dependent offenders through the rehabilitative aspects of treatment and the criminal justice system. In this way, TASC acts as a bridge between the court system with its legal sanctions and the treatment community with its emphasis on changing individual behavior. In 1991, TASC screened 2,224 Jefferson County offenders and referred 1,753 to community-based interventions. In addition to state and municipal funds, its funding included a $1,350,000 grant from the Federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. TASC currently operates multiple court alternatives and community corrections programs in Jefferson County including the TASC/ASAP Program at Family Court, Supervised Pretrial Release, and Correctional Drug Treatment Aftercare for parolees. TASC also participates in research, drug treatment, case management, basic education, mentoring, and job placement services for offenders.
