The statistical charts and graphs of this report highlight the increase of New Jersey adult inmates and parolees over the past 17 years.
Abstract
They also show changes in the composition of these populations such as a recent increase in drug offenders, a decrease in property offenders and violent offenders, and the increased incidence of mandatory minimum terms. The first set of charts and graphs focuses on overall New Jersey prison populations, crime rates, arrest rates, and incarceration rates. Next, log functions are used to compare the inmate population to New Jersey's general population. A sequence of pie graphs categorizes adult inmates according to offense type, length of term, race/ethnicity, and mandatory minimum sentences. Next, legislative enactments/amendments that impact on inmate population growth are listed. The following set of pie graphs compares the adult inmate population growth and base offense for different years from 1975 to 1994. The final set of charts and graphs focuses on the parolee population: its growth, the base offenses in different years, and its race/ethnicity. Each chart or graph includes a short commentary emphasizing the chart's most significant phenomena.
