This manual on the protection of children in drug- abusing families is designed for professionals in the fields of child welfare, mental health, health care, education, law enforcement, the religious community, and drug abuse prevention and treatment.
Abstract
The manual identifies various forms of parental drug abuse, assesses the strengths and needs of families affected by alcohol and/or other drug abuse, and describes service and intervention plans. The manual also includes sections on child abuse reporting, characteristics of drug-abusing parents, risks to children growing up in drug-abusing households, legal issues related to child maltreatment and parental drug abuse, family assessment approaches, and innovative intervention programs and service delivery strategies. In addition, the manual covers juvenile court involvement with drug-abusing families, parental support, and the importance of interagency cooperation in providing family services. Appendixes contain supplemental information on the nature of drug abuse, a sample medical center protocol, and a sample interagency agreement. 66 references and 6 tables
