This report presents data on inmates in New York on March 14, 1994, who have reported using drugs during the 6 months before incarceration or scored 9 or higher on the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST).
Abstract
The available data indicate that 66 percent of the total inmate population of 64,623 are drug abusers. This includes 66 percent of the male inmates and 65 percent of the female inmates. These estimates are conservative, because 12,818 inmates reported no drug use and had MAST scores under 9, and drug abuse data were missing for 9,458 inmates. If the missing data cases are excluded, 77 percent of the 55,165 inmates for whom data are available are drug abusers. Forty-four percent of the males and 57 percent of the females reported using cocaine or crack, 16 percent of the males and 24 percent of the females reported using heroin, 24 percent of the males and 3 percent of the females reported using marijuana or hashish, 8 percent of the males and 3 percent of the females reported using other drugs or narcotics, and 8 percent of the males and 13 percent of the females were identified as alcoholic with no drug use.
