This report focuses on the activity of several gangs -- the Bloods, Crips, Disciples, and Vice Lords -- that operate on a national level. It discusses gang organization and identifies two primary types of gangs, namely, copy cat and instrumental gangs. Types of gang members include hardcore members, associates, peripherals, and wanna-be's. Gang members can generally be identified by their use of graffiti, clothing, types of cars they drive, and their jewelry. Each gang also sports its unique body language, including hand signs and "crossing up." This report covers tattoos, monikers, hair styles, writing styles, hats, and use of beepers. Much of the report is devoted to a discussion of gangs' involvement in drug trafficking and their access to large and varied weapons arsenals. 26 references
