This report presents statistics from domestic-violence offense reports submitted to the New Jersey Uniform Crime Reporting System by every New Jersey law enforcement agency for 1993; included are comparisons and analyses between 1992 and 1993 data.
Abstract
There were 66,248 domestic violence offenses reported by the police in 1993, a 27-percent increase compared to the 52,321 reported in 1992. Murders decreased 10 percent in 1993 (54) compared to 1992 (60); assaults accounted for 57 percent (37,760) of the reported offenses in 1993. Arrests for 1993 (24,115) increased 22 percent over 1992 (19,720). Arrests were made in 36 percent (24,115) of the offenses reported for 1993. The most frequent day of domestic violence occurrences was Sunday, and the most frequent hours of domestic violence incidents were between 8:00 p.m. and midnight. Children were involved or present during 50 percent of all domestic violence offenses occurring in 1993. Wives were the victims in 31 percent of the cases, and ex- wives were the victims in 3 percent of the reported domestic violence offenses in 1993. Overall, females were victims in 83 percent of all domestic violence offenses. The number of domestic violence complaints that had prior court orders issued against the offender increased from 12,051 in 1992 to 15,631 in 1993, an increase of 30 percent. Alcohol or drugs were involved in 41 percent of the reported offenses occurring in 1993. Persons age 60 or over were victims in 3 percent of all reported domestic violence offenses that occurred in 1993. When viewed as a ratio of its occurrence to a fixed time interval, one act of domestic violence would occur every 7 minutes and 56 seconds. Extensive tables and figures
