This report presents statistics on minority and nonminority juveniles in different parts of the Minnesota juvenile justice system in 1990, based on information from statewide databases.
Abstract
In 1990, nonminorities accounted for 92 percent and minorities for 8 percent of Minnesota's juvenile population ages 10-17. Nonminorities accounted for 80.1 percent of all juvenile arrests; minorities for 19.9 percent. Over 63 percent of all juvenile adjudications reported to the Minnesota Supreme Court did not include race information. Among the cases where race information was known, nonminorities accounted for 77.3 percent of juvenile adjudications and minorities for 22.3 percent. Nonminorities accounted for 57.8 percent of all juveniles incarcerated, and minorities for 42.2 percent of those incarcerated. Further research and a requirement that race and ethnic information be included in juvenile justice databases are recommended. Figures
