This document presents the report and recommendations of a national task force established in 1990 that examined the nature and extent of services to victims of domestic assault in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland and to recommend ways to coordinate and extend them throughout the three countries.
Abstract
Individual sections describe the emotional and practical aspects of situations faced by abused women, the role of the criminal and civil law, and action steps to improve the current situation. Recommendations focus on improving victim protection under criminal and civil law; providing housing and support for victims of domestic violence; emphasizing interagency cooperation; and developing a national framework for action. The report emphasizes that criminal justice agencies should consider domestic assault to be as serious as other forms of violence; that all government and private agencies should develop their own formal policies, procedures, and staff training related to domestic assault; and that interagency understanding and cooperation are crucial.
