This booklet is designed to help inmates and correctional staff understand how the HIV virus, which causes AIDS, is passed along in prison and to recommend ways to avoid infection.
Abstract
The pamphlet discusses how HIV becomes AIDS; how HIV is transmitted through sexual contact and sharing drug-injection equipment; and how correctional officers can be infected on the job. Other sections cover the HIV-antibody test, the meaning of positive and negative test results, and symptoms of HIV infection. Two recommendations made for avoiding HIV infection are to engage only in safe sexual practices and to stop sharing needles and injecting drugs. HIV is often associated with tuberculosis, particularly within prisons. The booklet discusses the rights of HIV-positive inmates and provides the names of HIV/AIDS organizations and publications.
