These standards for New Jersey law enforcement agencies specify the policies and procedures that police officers should follow to ensure the rights of crime victims.
Abstract
Individual sections define victim rights and services during criminal investigations, victim rights and services during prosecution, the rights of special victim populations, and the role of State and county offices of victim-witness advocacy services. Topics covered include the notification of the next of kin following a death, the provision of information about victim compensation and the criminal justice process, information to victims about the status and closing of investigations, emergency referrals to medical care or other services, the return of property, communication during the prosecution process, and the protection of victims or witnesses who report threats or intimidation. Victims requiring special recognition, attention, and treatment include children, victims of domestic assault, persons with disabilities, elderly victims, survivors of homicide and sudden death, sexual assault victims, and victims of bias-related crimes.
