The NYSPIN provides law enforcement and criminal justice agencies immediate access, 24 hours a day, to essential information stored in local, State, national, and international files. The MIN is the internal computer system for NYSP administrative and investigative programs; since 1984, the MIN has grown to its current size of over 400 terminals. The NYSP has an installed base of approximately 350 personal computers. Plans call for replacing older equipment and installing new computers and local area networks throughout division and troop headquarters. The NYSP's information management plan for the 1994-1997 period focuses on NYSPIN terminal expansion, the inclusion of an on-line personnel data system in MIN, the establishment of a computer evidence examination laboratory, word processing system replacement, and the enhancement of crime data files. The role of technology in current NYSP operations and the status of major initiatives are addressed, and implementation approaches for future initiatives are described. Appendixes contain a glossary of acronyms, statistics on NYSPIN performance between 1988 and 1992, and information and charts on NYSP organization and operations.
