Following an explanation of how crime is measured in New South Wales, 1992 data from a crime victim survey are presented. Victimization data cover break and enter, attempted break and enter, motor vehicle theft, robbery, assault, and sexual assault. Respondents also indicated whether or not they reported the offenses to the police. Trends in offenses recorded by police for 1992 are then presented. Offenses addressed are theft, breaking and entering, malicious damage to property, motor vehicle theft, fraud, offenses against the person, drug offenses, sexual offenses, arson, driving offenses, and "other." Other data on crime pertain to crime location and cleared offenses. Selected offense profiles present data on trends in various offense types in recent years. Offense types are drug offenses, homicide, aggravated assault, sexual assault, household burglary, robbery, and motor vehicle theft. Information and data on criminal courts encompass the structure of the criminal justice system, trends in criminal court appearances, offenders' ages, court workload, court delay, bail, plea, conviction rates, appeals, sentencing, imprisonment, and life sentences. Remaining data pertain to the prison population and the cost of criminal justice.
