This California police instructor's guide presents performance objectives and curriculum content for a course on the police management of persons with various types of disabilities.
Abstract
Four of the sessions focus on the recognition and handling of persons with specific types of disabilities. They are persons who are deaf or hearing impaired, persons who are blind or visually impaired, and persons with Postpartum Psychosis. Other sessions address laws that protect persons with disabilities, requirements for detention under 5150 WIC, the rights of persons detained under 5150 WIC, unusual behavior or appearance, and alternative methods of evaluation and treatment. For each session, performance objectives are presented and learning content is outlined. For the course scenario, each student will safely and properly handle a person who is simulating mental illness. Supporting materials and references are also provided. They include explanations of the Lanterman-Petris- Short Act and the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act; descriptions of a developmental disability and mental disorder; assessment evaluation techniques; and information on California regional centers, types of behavior encountered by police, and behavioral elements that attract police attention.
