Using diversity as its theme, this 1993 annual report of the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department describes the strategies, programs, and advancements undertaken by the department during 1993.
Abstract
Due to the increased violence by juveniles and the number of guns confiscated from juveniles in Davidson County schools, uniformed officers were assigned to five high schools at the beginning of the 1993-94 school year. They have complemented the seven Youth Services detectives assigned to work with school-related problems. The police department is currently engaged in discussions with the school system about the placement of more officers in high schools. In an effort to minimize idle time, particularly among inner city youth, the Metropolitan Police Department's Athletic League expanded during 1993 to include a youth basketball program. Participants also attended enrichment sessions that covered such topics as character building, sex education, and drug awareness. More than 100 students from nine high schools were in the Youth League at the end of the year. In the area of police patrol, the department initiated bicycle squads in two sectors. Eight officers assigned to a substation in a public housing development are part of a special task force that will randomly patrol all of Nashville's public housing areas during afternoon and evening high-crime hours. The continuing efforts to enhance the training curriculum included the introduction of a diversity awareness program in 1993. Statistics address the number and racial composition of personnel, overall crime and offenses, budget, clearance rate, and case summary.
