The Canadian Panel on Violence Against Women was established in August 1991 to create a national action plan for implementation by the Federal Government and Canadian institutions to end violence against women in the country; this kit is designed to help communities to complement the work of governments and national organizations in implementing the national action plan.
Abstract
Part One provides guidance for the creation of a community profile. This will identify current services and facilities available to female victims, as well as the degree of safety for women in the community's public and private spaces. The section on "Getting Started" describes how to organize a community action group, who should be part of the group, and how the group can accomplish its tasks. Another section guides communities in how to obtain statistics on violence against women in a community and determine the services available to women. A "Women's Safety Audit Guide" provides what is needed to assess the safety of indoor and outdoor spaces in the community. It focuses on spaces as diverse as parks, office buildings, transit stations, and college campuses. Part Two helps communities use the information they have obtained in the community assessment to develop a community action plan. It contains a facilitator's guide, a seven-part workbook, and sample worksheets that will help communities focus on key areas of concern. Some mechanisms for implementing a community action plan include shelters, healing centers, and second-stage housing; community and social support services; health and wellness services; education and prevention; police and legal services; making workplaces and the environment safe; and media, arts, and culture. Sample worksheets, appended supplementary material, a list of additional reading material, and a list of resource organizations
