Abstract
The purpose of the class is to provide the student with a better understanding of the victimization issues and police techniques for better interacting with crime victims. Given a scenario that involves a person in crisis, the student will perform those tasks appropriate to the event. The learning activity for crisis intervention will present a series of video re-enactments, exercises, role-plays, word pictures, or other depictions of a law enforcement contact with a person in crisis. The student will then participate in a discussion on the psychological reactions to victimization, behaviors exhibited by persons in crisis, and verbal and nonverbal techniques for diffusing the crisis. Another scenario will involve a law-enforcement contact with a crime victim. The student will identify any underlying or related victim problems, provide all information to the victim as required by law, and identify the appropriate referral agencies and support services. Course content is outlined for use with the scenarios and learning activities. A section on supporting material and references is a source for obtaining materials for instruction, remediation, additional reading, viewing, or for planning local blocks of instruction.
