Five major counties (Clackamas, Lane, Marion, Multnomah, and Washington) accounted for 59.9 percent of the total crime in Oregon for 1993 and 64 percent of the total crime against persons. Crimes against persons increased by 4.3 percent between 1992 and 1993. Increases were reported for willful homicide, kidnaping, aggravated assault, and simple assault. Decreases were observed for negligent homicide, rape and other sex crimes, and robbery. Crimes against property increased by 0.3 percent between 1992 and 1993. Increases were reported in larceny, motor vehicle theft, forgery and counterfeiting, embezzlement, and stolen property offenses. Decreases were noted for burglary, arson, fraud, and vandalism. Behavioral crime rates rose by 1.3 percent between 1992 and 1993, with increases reported for weapon offenses, drug law violations, offenses against the family, disorderly conduct, curfew violations, and runaways and decreases reported for prostitution, gambling, driving under the influence, and liquor law violations. Oregon's index crime rate for 1993 was 580.2 per 10,000 population, an 0.9 percent decrease for the 591.6 rate of 1992. The total number of arrests in Oregon increased by 1.8 percent between 1992 and 1993; male arrests increased by 1.1 percent, female arrests by 4.4 percent, adult arrests by 0.7 percent, and juvenile arrests by 5.1 percent.
