This World Health Organization (WHO) annual report presents detailed statistical information on changing trends in health status and death causes.
Abstract
The first part of the report describes methods developed in China and India to generate reliable statistics on deaths and vital events in the absence of a system of universal vital registration. These methods are presented as models for many other countries where death registration is lacking or inadequate and where alternative information sources can be used to monitor the health situation. The second part of the report presents health and demographic data in tables on population growth rates, natality and mortality, women and children, and health personnel. The final and most extensive part of the report contains vital statistics and life tables for many countries and profiles the demographic situation of each country in terms of parameters likely to be of greatest relevance to health management. Detailed statistical data are provided on death causes by age and sex, as well as country-specific statistics on life expectancy, number of survivors, and chances of dying from eight major causes.
