The Federal Bureau of Prisons has developed several innovative tools for making well-informed managerial decisions.
Abstract
The Bureau's on-line inmate information system, known as SENTRY, has modules to monitor inmate statistics, property accounting, litigation, administrative remedies, and disciplinary tracking. Data entered into the SENTRY system overwrite previous data, thereby providing a snapshot of information at one point in time. To keep historical information and provide users with easy access in various aggregations, the Bureau developed the Key Indicators/Strategic Support System (KI/SSS). This is a PC-based management information system that includes information on inmates and facilities such as demographics, misconduct, administrative remedy, furlough, community corrections, educational participation, population, capacity, admissions and discharge, and sentencing/classification. Program reviews are conducted using discipline-specific guidelines developed and refined during the management assessment process. Institution Character Profiles, conducted approximately every 3 years, are used by regional directors and their wardens as a means of communicating information and determining resource needs. All these tools are used by the Bureau in its management assessment and strategic planning processes. 2 notes and 10 references
