This training manual is intended to assist volunteer mentors in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to form effective one-to-one relationships with male juvenile offenders to develop their skills in communication, self- esteem, and bonding.
Abstract
The mentors are adults from churches in Dade County (Fla.) who volunteer to work with youth, while the volunteer's church sponsors the youth's entire family. The youth are nonhabitual offenders referred by the Dade County Juvenile Alternative Sanctions System. The mentors are trained through an orientation followed by six seminars that expand the curriculum and provide opportunities to discuss problems. Mentors are advised to study all materials thoroughly, practice the suggested activities in the student manual, attend all seminars, and make and keep commitments with their clients. The manual explains the role of the mentor, the program's objectives and operations, and the expected outcomes. It also includes checklists and forms covering the mentor's responsibilities, personal goals, communication skills, decisionmaking, and the contract between the mentor and client.
