Series in many tables cover the previous decade, and information is also provided on restraints and inmates who are segregated from the general prison population. Information on the reconvictions of inmates following discharge from custodial sentences has been reinstated in this report. Information on those discharged in 1987 and reconvicted within 2 and 4 years is now provided because of the reprogramming of the Home Office database (the Offenders' Index). The introduction provides a summary of legislation relevant to the trends in the series of data for 1982-92. Chapters provide statistics pertinent to the prison population in 1992; remand prisoners; young offenders, adult male inmates, and adult female inmates under sentence; noncriminal inmates; fine defaulters; life-sentence prisoners; reconvictions of inmates discharged from prison in 1987; and restraints and special cells for segregated inmates. Data show that the average population in custody, including those in police cells, in 1992 was 45,800, only 100 lower than in 1991. Compared with 1982, the population was 2,100 higher in 1992. An increase of 2,700 in the remand population and of 4,100 in the male adult sentenced population was partly offset by a decrease of 4,800 male young offenders. The report notes that the size of the population has been greatly affected by changes in policy and practice in the criminal justice system over the period. 100 tables
