Some of the inmates completed their treatment during those six months, while others completed it during the first 3 months of 1992. A subgroup of 101 inmates released with some type of community supervision was followed into the community. While many inmates referred to the treatment program were young, first offenders convicted of drug and property offenses, they were already in the middle and late stages of their drug dependencies. The most common dependencies were alcohol and cocaine. Inmates who finished the treatment were less likely to incur a prison infraction than they had been prior to treatment; they were less likely than controls to have an infraction for violent behavior, but as likely to have a chemical dependency infraction. Areas for further program and policy review include the referral and assessment process, treatment design, linkages with community treatment, and outcome measures. 20 tables, 8 references, and 2 appendixes
