Descriptive data are presented for male, female, and total inmates by race, age, Metropolitan Statistical Area of conviction, offense, education, prior prison confinements and probations, good conduct time class, custody level, sentence length, and time served. The Texas prison inmate population totaled 69,054 as of August 31, 1993; 47 percent were black, 28 percent were white, and 24 percent were Hispanic. The average age of inmates was 32.8 years. Inmates convicted of violent offenses accounted for 47 percent of the total inmate population. Property offenders and drug offenders comprised 28 percent and 18 percent of all inmates, respectively. The average educational achievement of inmates was 10th grade. Eight of 10 inmates were in trusty good time earning categories, and 7 of 10 were classified as minimum-custody inmates. The average sentence length was 24.1 years. Changes in the inmate population and in time served between 1992 and 1993 are noted. Tables and charts
