The Montgomery County, Maryland, Police Department's Technology Committee is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and recommending equipment and technology that will enhance the department's ability to implement community policing, improve the delivery of community services, and enhance police officer safety.
Abstract
The Technology Committee has focused on three major areas: equipment and technology, communications systems, and computer systems. Goals are to analyze and evaluate current equipment, systems, and technology and to identify emerging needs. Specific objectives and strategies associated with each goal are outlined. A history of computerized system developments is presented, as well as information on current equipment and technology and future technological requirements. Recommendations to improve technological capabilities, computer systems, and communications in the Montgomery County Police Department are offered. Supplemental information is appended on Maryland's incident-based reporting system, computerized systems for police crime reporting, the Montgomery County Criminal Justice Wide Area Network, County links to Federal and State criminal justice information systems, and the National Crime Information Center. 1 table and 11 figures
