A total of 151 new facilities will be built in the United States, adding more than 102,000 bed spaces. In addition, some States will build privately operated facilities or make additions to existing facilities. A total of 4,700 beds will hold maximum-security inmates; 32,900 beds will hold medium-security inmates; 6,700 beds will hold minimum-security inmates; 43,000 beds will hold mixed security inmates; and 14,900 beds will hold other security inmates. Of all reported prison construction projects, 96 will be built by the end of 1995. Because the need for prison space and beds continues to outpace the rate of prison construction, several correctional systems will use temporary housing to hold excess inmates. Canadian correctional systems will construct 16 facilities, 14 new facilities and two additions, that will add 1,192 beds.
