The Canadian government launched a $25.1 million Child Sexual Abuse Initiative in 1986 and a $40 million Family Violence Initiative in 1988. The current $136 million Initiative on Family Violence requests that police officers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, social workers, and teachers all play a role in violence prevention. The initiative is broad- based but aims to meet the needs of aboriginals, residents of remote and rural areas, members of ethnocultural minority communities, and persons with disabilities. It targets family violence on seven fronts: (1) involves all Canadians and mobilizes community action; (2) strengthens Canada's legal framework; (3) establishes services in Indian reserves and Inuit communities; (4) enhances Canada's ability to help victims and stop offenders; (5) provides more housing for abused women and their children; (6) offers better national information on the extent and nature of family violence; and (7) shares information and solutions.
