Female students at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., talk about sexual assault on campus and the university administration's perceived lack of response to the problem.
Abstract
A graduate student indicates she was the victim of two sexual assaults as an undergraduate, a recent graduate says eight of her close friends have been sexually attacked, and a freshman advisor charges there is at least one rape each weekend in freshman dorms. Many sources report that Gallaudet's administration has either denied the problem or failed to deal with it effectively. The university's president, however, says students have not approached him directly on the issue of sexual assault and denies the claim that victims are discouraged from pursuing charges against attackers. He also notes that Gallaudet should not be singled out, since sexual assault is a national problem. The university has recently established a task force to develop a comprehensive sexual assault policy for Gallaudet University. Numerous examples of sexual assault on campus are cited, as well as Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics on campus sexual assaults nationally.
