Guidelines are presented to help educators give the assistance needed by abused women and their children; the guidelines include a school-shelter protocol.
Abstract
Educators should be able to understand the needs of children who come from violent homes, be alert to assault indicators, and teach preventive attitudes and skills. Interviews can be helpful in evaluating the behavior and academic performance of children and children's perceptions of abuse. Educators should also realize that wife assault is a crime against society and that victims need protection. Educators should permit victims to voice their feelings and discuss how the violence affects them and their children. Responsibilities of principals and teachers in Renfrew County with respect to wife assault are listed, and interview procedures for assessing family violence and its effects are outlined. A school-shelter protocol is included that focuses on procedures for child placement in shelters and intake schools, contact with home schools, student admissions and absences, and textbooks and school supplies.
