Representatives of Federal law enforcement agencies discuss their effectiveness in implementing the enforcement and interdiction provisions of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986.
Abstract
Testimony is provided by representatives of the U.S. Customs Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Defense Task Force on Drug Enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Each witness reports on the sufficiency of his agency's resources for implementing enforcement and interdiction provisions of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986. In their questioning of the witnesses, committee members inquire about overall enforcement strategy, interagency cooperation, and estimates of the percentage of various types of drugs interdicted prior to entering the U.S. drug market. Witnesses agree that apart from the effective reduction of drug production in source countries and a reduction of demand in this country, interdiction efforts can keep only a small percentage of drugs from reaching drug consumers. Witnesses also discuss what additional efforts and strategy components can be implemented to improve drug interdiction and supply reduction.
