The NIC Academy, located in Longmont, Colorado, provides leadership and assistance for correctional personnel. It promotes and facilitates the development of effective, humane, and constitutional correctional systems by training prison, jail, and community corrections practitioners. Seminars are available for correctional administrators and trainer development, as well as seminars on special issues. The NIC envisions that correctional training will enhance professionalism and specialization in a cost-effective way. Eligibility and application procedures are described for participation in NIC training initiatives. These initiatives focus on quality improvement strategies in corrections, building effective work teams, integrating human resource systems, public and media relations, management development for women and minorities, and correctional leadership development. Special issue seminars encompass such topics as cognitive approaches to changing offender behavior, female offenders, accountability in correctional programs, the management and treatment of tuberculosis in the correctional setting, prison security, and prison industries management. Community corrections training activities target parole boards and offender risk management.
