This self-report study gathered information on the extent to which ordinary, otherwise honest individuals had knowingly purchased stolen property.
Abstract
The research was part of a larger study on property crime and crime prevention. A survey questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of 1,200 persons in Midland, Tex. Responses came from 739 persons (62 percent). Findings revealed that 17 percent reported having bought stolen goods in the past, 12 percent reported being motivated to buy stolen merchandise, and another 15 percent were unsure whether they would buy stolen property if offered. Findings supported an opportunity perspective of the crime of knowingly buying stolen goods. Having previously purchased stolen property was also significantly related to whether the participant had an opportunity to buy (had been offered) and whether the person was motivated (would buy if offered) to buy stolen goods.
