This directory explains the different branches and tasks of the Office of General Police and Crime Combat (DGPC).
Abstract
The Office was created in 1991 as part of a comprehensive reform of the criminal justice system in an effort to increase mutual collaboration and coherence among justice agencies. The directory's purpose is to help public prosecutors and other criminal justice agencies to access the DGPC. A section of this guide is devoted to each of the Office's three branches. First, the goals and methods of the branch for crime prevention are listed; they include the formulating of preventive policies for government projects, communities, businesses, and public prosecutors; initiating and coordinating the preventive projects of such organizations; funding education which promotes crime readiness and the transfer of norms and values; developing technological crime prevention; assisting mass-media campaigns; and maintaining international contacts. The police branch lists such goals as assuring a sufficient level of police action and public safety; developing and executing a coherent police policy; assuring a well supplied police force; developing instruments and studies to enhance public safety; evaluating policy-related developments; and promoting collaboration among those involved in police administration and public safety. Last, the responsibilities of the branch for criminal law are divided into general criminal law, policy development and testing, pardons and reprieves, international legal assistance, and administering special legislation (including the enforcement of the Netherlands' law against gambling).
