The statistics present status of participants and number of incidents by offense (homicide, assault, kidnapping, sexual assault, criminal mischief, risk of injury, breach of peace, and disorderly conduct); the number of incidents by year (1989-93); arrests by most serious offense; sex and age of participants; closest relationship of parties; and relationship of participants (victim to offender and both arrestees to each other). Other data address weapons used, serious injury (1989-93), extent of injury, prior court orders, liquor/drugs involved, day of week, and time of day. Data are also summarized for cases of family-violence homicide that occurred in 1993. Homicides were selected for rigorous analysis, because the small number of incidents allows examination of each item of descriptive information available on the act and the parties involved. The family-violence homicides examined include 16 arrest incidents (with 19 victims) and seven incidents (with nine victims) that resulted in the offender's suicide. There were 19,629 incidents of family violence in 1993 in which at least one person was arrested during 1993, a 3.7-percent decrease in the number of incidents since 1992. A total of 80.4 percent of victims were female and 85.6 percent of offenders were male. Incidents in which serious injury occurred declined 8.4 percent since 1992. Liquor/drugs were involved in half (46.5 percent) of the incidents in which that information was known.
