Abstract
Background materials contain information and data on battering, myths and misconceptions about abuse, the role of values and gender in violence, the role of alcohol and drugs in violence, and characteristics of abusive husbands. The legal response to domestic violence in Massachusetts is discussed, particularly the Abuse Prevention Act. Information on battered women in clinical settings focuses on identifying abused women, reviewing the patient's history, interviewing suspected battered women, physical examination and medical records, collecting physical evidence, reporting violent incidents to the police, risk assessment and safety planning, working with populations who have special needs, and preventing abuse. The importance of identifying and assisting battered pregnant women and the impact of spouse abuse on children are discussed. References, tables, and figures
