This fiscal 1992 Annual Report of the South Dakota Department of Corrections presents information and statistics on juvenile corrections, adult corrections, community corrections, crime victims compensation program, substance abuse programs, and correctional industries.
Abstract
Highlights are presented for each of these corrections' areas. Information and statistics are presented for each adult and juvenile corrections facility. Statistics on juvenile corrections address the racial breakdown of the corrections population, admission source, and judicial circuits. Statistics on adult corrections encompass the average daily count, population projection, crime breakdown, median sentence, average time served, education level upon admission, racial breakdown, female housing assignment, male housing assignment, escapes and walkaways, and the recidivism rate. Statistics on community corrections address parole hearings/parole granted, parole revocations by violator type, percent granted parole by race and sex, parole agent areas and field offices, and average end-of- month caseload. Overall, the year brought a number of challenges to corrections in South Dakota, including a record number of inmates, the opening of a new prison facility, a disturbance at the penitentiary, a record number of juveniles awaiting placement in institutions, and participation in the Federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act. 20 tables
