The DOC has about 23,000 employees, is responsible for over 53,000 inmates and 130,000 probationers and parolees, and is divided into 5 geographic regions. The DOC views the professional development of employees as an important component in achieving department goals. The DOC operates two correctional training academies and coordinates training activities and programs with staff development professionals at central, regional, institutional, and circuit levels throughout the State. Staff training is mandatory, 40 hours yearly for professional staff and 20 hours yearly for clerical staff. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, staff training is provided using multimedia techniques, computer-based training, and videotaped materials. The DOC is committed to developing and maintaining a balanced, diverse workplace and to effectively using human resources. Gender-specific security positions have been identified throughout the DOC to ensure equal opportunity for all correctional officers, and the Bureau of Staff Development has implemented diversity training programs. The DOC offers a comprehensive training course on sexual harassment, conducts educational outreach programs for correctional personnel, and offers inmate education programs.
