The initial goals of the Lehigh County program were to strength cooperation and communication between the school district and the probation department; to enable juvenile justice staff to educate school personnel about the duties of probation officers; to provide schools with an alternative for dealing with problem students; to act as a liaison between the school, family, and probation department; and to assist in drug prevention programming. Two probation officers, who are physically based in the schools, prepare plans for students on probation, and meet with them at the school. Home checks ensure that the students fulfill the requirements of their probation plan. Detentions, suspensions, tardiness, and absenteeism among these students has declined since the program's inception, leading to the program's expansion.
