This report highlights the activities of the Singapore Prison Service in 1992-1993.
Abstract
In 1993, the Singapore Prison Service completed construction of two new prisons, one of which was designed to help relieve the overcrowding situation of some of the other male adult prisons, and the second to house female offenders, including those in need of drug treatment. A third facility being planned will consolidate departmental drug rehabilitation programs for all offenders. Over the next two years, the Prison Service will implement a plan whereby all junior correctional officers who have good performance evaluations and no disciplinary records will be promoted to their next level. With greater promotion opportunities and better prospects, junior officers will also be expected to perform at a level commensurate with their higher rank. This report calls on all correctional personnel to adopt a positive corporate culture that will promote integrity, commitment, and loyalty. Articles included in the report focus on the changing role of women prison officers, prison industries, aftercare programs, and departmental strategies to improve the health and physical fitness of its staff. A record of major events and statistics for the reporting period are presented.
