This handbook presents a step-by-step guide to police defensive tactics training.
Abstract
Rather than employing a traditional martial arts approach, this handbook emphasizes the use of the lowest level of force necessary to control the subject and the use of verbal skills throughout an encounter in order to reduce a police officer's later legal liability risk. The use of over 240 photographs helps the student master the basic skills presented here and build realistic expectations. The first 11 chapters of the book present defensive techniques: stances, blocks, basic handstrike/kicking defense and control, escort and control techniques, miscellaneous street techniques, defending against grabbing attacks, tactical partner assist, removal of subject from motor vehicle, handcuffing, weapon defense, and counter-offensive handgun skills. The final chapter focuses on attitudes and philosophy: confrontation, carelessness, enmity, and other emotions.
