This article describes how Canada, through a cooperative, consensual approach developed and promoted by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), has resulted in encouraging efforts to curb media violence. Parents, teachers, school principals and school board members, as well as industry officials and members of the National Film Board of Canada are involved in the efforts. To focus these efforts, the CRTC established several objectives: the implementation of strong, credible industry codes; the development of a program classification system; the promotion of the use of V-chip technology; and the development of public awareness and media literacy programs. The CRTC's efforts have received governmental endorsement. Consensus-building meetings, conferences, and other forums have kept interested parties involved. Key industry participants formed Action Group on Violence on Television (AGVOT). Global action to curb television violence have been pursued and encouraged. The article includes a list of Canadian television violence contacts with addresses and telephone numbers. The contact list includes industry, parents/educators/consumers, and government representatives.
