This text informs and guides students in examining crime in their schools and communities, as well as applying the prevention lessons they learn.
Abstract
The first chapter is designed to help students define crime, distinguish among crimes based on their seriousness, discuss causes of crime and suggest solutions, and explain the kinds of roles teens can have in crime prevention. In focusing on crime victims, the second chapter identifies those groups of individuals who are most often crime victims, explains the problems victims face, and profiles services for victims. A chapter on "Teens and Crime" identifies the kinds and locations of crimes against teens, suggests teen crime-prevention strategies, describes how to report a crime, and explains what happens to victims and witnesses after a crime is reported. A chapter on violent crime defines it, discusses the characteristics of the most serious violent crimes, and examines strategies for preventing and avoiding violent crime. A chapter on child abuse defines child abuse and neglect, explains the difference between abuse and neglect, discusses the causes and effects of child abuse and neglect, and suggests some effective responses to child abuse and neglect. Remaining chapters address acquaintance rape, substance abuse, drunk driving, property crime and vandalism, shoplifting, and criminal and juvenile justice. Appended suggestions for designing a project, a glossary, and a subject index
