Sixteen articles identify various causes of violence and suggest ways in which Canadian schools, in conjunction with communities, can help counter aggressive and violent behaviors by children and youth.
Abstract
The first article reviews the work of the Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario in acting as a catalyst to bring together individuals and organizations in every part of the province to establish partnerships that work towards the prevention and reduction of violence in their communities. Two articles focus on school-based social-skills training for students, which is designed to develop interactive skills that will preclude violent and aggressive behaviors. Other articles that focus on strategies for developing prosocial behaviors pertain to the structuring of motivation for good student behavior and changing negative behaviors. Other articles address specific types of violence, notably violence against women and physical abuse. In connection with violence against women, one article explores the content of reader books and how they reinforce a patriarchal view of societal gender roles. Other articles focus on media violence, its prevalence and effects on children's attitudes and behaviors, and suggest how schools can mount programs to counter media violence.
